Henry Jones Lanchester
Henry Jones Lanchester (c1834-1914), Architect and Surveyor
1834 January 5th. Born in Islington the son of Frederick Lanchester and his wife Mary Ann Smith. They were married 26th October 1831 at St Clement Danes.
1841 Living at Park Street, Greenwich: Mary Ann Lanchester (age 36), Independent. With Frederick Lanchester (age 8); Henry Lanchester (age 7); and Mary (age 6).[1]
1851 Living at Greenwich: Frederick W. Lanchester (age 18 born Pinkney's Green), Articled Clerk; and Henry J. Lanchester (age 17 born Islington), Surveyors Clerk.[2]
1861 Living as a lodger at 16 Warwick Road, Westminster: Henry Jones Lanchester (age 27 born Islington), Architect and Surveyor.[3]
1862 April 26th. Married Octavia Ward (1834-1916)

With his wife Octavia Lanchester (age 36 born St. James) and their children Henry Lanchester (age 7 born St. John's Wood); Mary Lanchester (age 6 born Lewisham); Ellen C. Lanchester (age 4 born Lewisham); Fredrick Lanchester (age 2 born Lewisham); and Frances Lanchester (age 8 Months born Brighton). Two visitors and four servants.[4]

1878 Patent. '346. And Henry Jones Lanchester, of Brighton, in the county of Sussex, Architect and Surveyor, has given the like notice in respect of the invention of "an improved facing brick or tile."'[5]

Lanchester (age 19 born St. John's Wood), Architect Pupil; Mary Lanchester (age 16 born Lewisham); Frederick W. Lanchester (age 12 born Lewisham); Edith Lanchester (age 9 born Hove); Edward N. Lanchester (age 7 born Hove); and George H. Lanchester (age 6 born Hove). Three servants. [6]
1891 Living at 31 Lister's Avenue, Battersea: Henry J. Lanchester (age 57 born Islington), Architect and Surveyor. With his wife Octavia Lanchester (age 56 born St. James) and their children Henry V. Lanchester (age 27 born at St John's Wood), Architect; Eleanor C. Lanchester (age 24 born Lewisham), Fashion Artist; Frederick W. Lanchester (age 22 born Lewisham), Patentee; Francis Lanchester (age 20 born Brighton), Bank Clerk; Edith Lanchester (age 19 born Hove), Teacher in Training School; Edward M. Lanchester (age 17 born Hove), Auctioneer's Clerk. Three servants.[7]
1895 Letter to The Times concerning his daughter (Edith) who is 'not of sound mind'. Address is Salvadore, Kingston Hill.[8] [9] It appears that Edith was a radical and outspoken socialist and when she decided to marry James Sullivan of the 'artisan class', and because of this her family had her committed to an asylum for the insane. Released a couple of days later. [10] [11] Edith died in 1966 at Brighton.
1901 Living at Ripley Villa, Acacia Grove, New Malden: Henry J. Lanchester (age 67 born Islington), Living on Own Means. With his wife Octavia Lanchester (age 66 born St James) and their daughter Mary Lanchester (age 36 born Lewisham), Artist on Own Account. Two servants. [12]
1911 Living at Southlea, Lindfield, Surrey: Henry Lanchester (age 77 born Islington), Retired Architect. With his wife (married 48 years with nine children - eight living) Octavia Lanchester (age 76 born St. Giles). Two servants.[13]
1914 March. Died
1914 Obituary. 'ONE OF THE "SIX-FOOT" GUARDS. The death has occurred at Lindfield, near Haywards Heath, of Henry Jones Lanchester, F.R.1.8.A. Mr Lanchester, who died his 80th birthday, celebrated his golden wedding in 1912. When the Volunteer movement was started, he joined the Six-Foot " Guards, so called because every member of the corps was six feet more.'[14] Responsible 43 years ago of laying out part of Hove. Wrote 'How to make a House healthy and Comfortable'.[15]
