Model, with a drawing and description, of the registered "jury tiller," for steering a ship when the usual helm fittings become disabled through fire abaft, the rudder-tree or head being shattered by shot or a wringing strain, the inboard tiller breaking short off, or the wheel gear breaking down suddenly in a gale or a tide-way. It consists of an auxiliary appendage to the rudder at the water-line, and can be thrown into gear in an instant.
