From Graces Guide

413. ALLEN, EDWARD ELLIS, Steel Yard Wharf, Upper Thames Street — Inventor.

Electro-magnetic railway-train alarum, for communicating with the engine-driver from any part of the train. The alarum consists of the ordinary steam whistle worked by an electro-magnet, the current passing through the side-chains; thus any additional connection between the carriages after they are attached in the usual way is avoided.
