Cannel coal, suitable for oil or gas manufacture.

The cannel coal, found in the Pirnie colliery, near Leven, Fifeshire, is highly suitable for the manufacture of oil and gas. The brown part is 8 inches, and the black 16 inches in thickness. By chemical analysis the former is found to yield 78.75, and the latter 59.17 gallons of crude oil per ton. The first named gives 13,500 cubic feet of 28-candle gas; and the average yield of the whole seam is 10,800 cubic feet of 20-candle gas per ton.
