Locomotive engine.
The boiler is composed entirely of thick-edged plates, and is double-riveted throughout. No angle iron is used, the barrel of the boiler being flanged where attached to the tube plate.
The principal dimensions are:
- Boiler barrel - 11 ft. 6 in. long, 4 ft. 3 in. diameter.
- Fire box - 4 ft. 9 in. long, 4 ft. 3 in. wide.
- Plates of barrel — 7/16th in. thick.
- Plates of firebox - 1 in. thick.
- Copper fire-box - 4 ft. 0.5 in. long, 3 ft. 7 in. wide, and 4 ft. 8.5 in. deep.
- Brass tubes - 2 ft. diameter, 180 in number.
- Heating surface – 1,160 square feet.
- Cylinders — 16 in. diameter, 24 in. stroke.
- Wheels - 5 ft. 2 in. diameter, six coupled with outside cranks.
- Crank axle has four bearings — the inside 6.75 in. diameter, and the outside 6 in.; the leading and trailing axles have outside bearings 6 in. diameter.
The Engine is designed by Mr. Kirtley, Engineer to the Midland Railway Company.
