Formed for a trunk line to connect Bombay with Agra and Central India by way of the Surat, Baroda and Neemuch, and the valley of the Mhye and the Chumbul and thus to form a junction between the trunk line of the East Indian and the Presidency of Bombay; also to construct a line from Surat along the valley of the Taptee in to the great cotton districts of Candeish and Berar, and the coal and mineral districts of the Nerbudda with branches.
