1914/01/14 Brooklands Record Attempts
Note: This is a sub-section of 1914 Brooklands Calendar
'The Royal Automobile Club, having recently authorised that records might in future be registered for, the two miles, the five miles, and ten miles, Mr. L. G. Hornsted driving the two hundred h.p. Benz at Brooklands yesterday, established world's record figures for the two former distances, accomplishing the two miles in 58.99 sec. a speed of 122.05 m.p.h., and the five miles in 155.03 sec., a speed of 116.08 m.p.h. The regulations governing distances shorter than two miles now stipulate that the car must travel in both directions of the track, the figures to count as world's records being the mean time and speed. Therefore, the speed of 123.88 m.p.h. for the half-mile and 123.54 m.p.h. for the mile accomplished by the Benz only beat records in Class 1, which is for cars exceeding 1329 c.c. capacity.'[1]
