UNION-CASTLE MAIL STEAMSHIP CO., Ltd., (THE). Head Offices: 3, Fenchurch Street, London, E.C. The Company was registered 15th July, 1881, as the Castle Mail Packets Company, Limited, and as from 1st January, 1900, amalgamated with the Union Steam Ship Company, Limited, originally formed in 1853 as the Union Steam Collier Company; on amalgamation the name was changed as above. The Cape Mail service was inaugurated by the despatch from Southampton of the R.M.S. " Dane " (530 tons) on the 15th September, 1857. She was followed by the " Celt " and " Norman " on 15th October and 15th November respectively, the sailing thereafter being continued at monthly intervals during the continuance of the contract. The "Iceland" was the pioneer steamer of the Castle Line, and started on her first voyage on 23rd January, 1872. She was followed by her sister ship, the " Gothland," both vessels being of about 1,400 tons burthen. In the meantime the Cape Parliament made an allowance to the Castle Line for the carriage of letters, and granted an additional bonus of £100 per diem for delivery of the same within the stipulated period of thirty-seven days, a concession which resulted in a gain to the Company of £1,000 per voyage. When the postal contract was renewed in 1876, the mail service was equally divided between the Castle and the Union Lines. This arrangement was confirmed in 1893 for a period of seven years. From October, 1893, the charge for letters was reduced to 2-id. per half-ounce, and the contract tune to nineteen days. Since then the charge for letters has been further reduced to l d. per ounce, while the contract time is now under seventeen days. Directors: Sir Owen Philipps, K.C.M.G. (Chairman and Managing), Mr. James Cameron Head (Deputy - Chairman), the Rt. Hon. Lord Pirrie, K.P., P.C., Mr. Edward Norton. Premises: In addition to the London offices in Fenchurch Street there are branch offices of the Company at Canute Road, Southampton; 1, King Street Chambers, Leeds; African House, Water Street, Liverpool; 15, Cross Street, Manchester; 32, Paradiso Street, Birmingham; and 137, West George Street, Glasgow; and in South Africa at Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London, Durban, Delagoa Bay, Beira, and Johannesburg. Routes and Services: The Royal Mail Steamers of the Union-Castle Line are despatched from Southampton every Saturday for the Cape of Good Hope and Natal, via Madeira. From London intermediate steamers are despatched every week, calling at Southampton, taking passengers for the Cape Colony, Natal, and Delagoa Bay. These steamers have previously called at Antwerp and Hamburg, thus providing a direct service between the Continent and South and East Africa via the United Kingdom. They proceed alternately via Las Palmas and Teneriffe, and, under contract with the Imperial Government, call once a month with mails at Ascension and St. Helena. Once a month also a steamer is despatched from Middlesbrough, Rotterdam, Antwerp, and London for South African Ports, and Mauritius, calling at Lobito Bay. Every twenty-eight days a steamer is despatched from England via Gibraltar, Marseilles, Naples and the Suez Canal to Mombasa, Zanzibar, Port Amelia, Mozambique, Chinde, Beira, Delagoa Bay, to Durban, connecting at the last-named port with the Royal Mail Steamer up and down the coast. So that the Tour Round Africa—an intensely interesting trip—may now be made by Union-Castle Steamers. The Company also maintains another direct service of steamers between the United States of America and South and East Africa. During Easter, Whitsuntide, and the summer season cheap fares are in operation for trips to Hamburg and Antwerp, and also for Madeira and the Canary Islands. The steamship services of the " Union " and Castle " Lines, now amalgamated under the name of the Union-Castle Company, have long been favourably known to the travelling public for their regularity and efficiency, and have played a part of the first significance in the commercial and general development of the South and East African Colonies. The fine modern steamships constituting the Company's fleet have a high reputation for speed, safety, and comfortable accommodation. The fleet at the present date (1913) consists of forty-one full-powered steamships, with a gross tonnage of about 316,316 tons. In striking contrast to the pioneer Mail Steamer " Dane," above mentioned, are the steamers of over 13,000 tons each, the latest additions to the fleet. Telephone: No. 2413 Avenue. Telegraphic and Cable Address: " Unicas0e, London."
