HISTORICAL SKETCH.
THE Londonderry and Lough Swilly Ry. was incorporated in 1853, and revived in 1859 to make a railway from the western shore on Lough Foyle to Carrowen in Co. Donegal. The line is open to picturesque watering places at Buncrana and Innishowen. The Letterkenny Rly., for which an amended Act was passed in 1863, and a subsequent Act in 1880, joins the Londonderry and Lough Swilly line at Farland Point. This is worked by the Londonderry and Lough Swilly Rly. for the Board of Public Works, Dublin. A branch line, 18| miles in length, was constructed under the Railways (Ireland) Act, 1896, from Buncrana to Carndonagh, by the Lough Swilly Railway Company, who supplied part of the capital. It was completed and opened for goods and passenger traffic on the 1st July, 1901, and is worked by the Londonderry and Lough Swilly Railway Company under a perpetual agreement with the Treasury.
The Burtonport Extension Rly., 50 miles in length, running from Letterkenny to Burtonport, was constructed by the State under the Railways (Ireland) Act, 1896, and was opened for traffic on 7th March, 1903. It is worked by the Londonderry and Lough Swilly Rly. under a perpetual agreement with the Treasury. The whole of the Railway is now narrow gauge. The Company also own and work Motor Ships by which a regular service on Lough Swilly is maintained between various points on Lough Swilly for passengers and merchandise. These services form a cheap and convenient route to and from places in the Fanad Peninsula of Co. Donegal. The Company also operates road passenger services on an extensive scale, covering practically the whole of the area served by the railway. Motor delivery services for goods traffic are also in operation at many stations on the system covering a wide area.
The “ Boundary Line ” between Northern Ireland and the Irish Free State crosses the L. (Sr L. S. Ry. at a point about 2 miles from Derry and a Customs Clearance station with the necessary sidings for traffic exchanged between the “ North ” and “ South ” has been erected at Tooban Junction 6 miles from Derry. The Head Offices are at Pennyburn, near Londonderry, together with the locomotive works and general repair shops.

Steepest Gradient.—1 in 50 for a distance of 4 miles (46| mile post to 50J mile post), falling towards Dunfanaghy Station.
Permanent Way.—Flat-bottom rails, 50 to 70 lbs. per yard; sleepers, 6 ft. x 9 in., placed 2 ft. Gm. apart, centre to centre.

Heating of Passenger Trains.—Foot warmers.
System of Automatic Brake.—Automatic vacuum.
