A. Harris and Son

From Graces Guide

1857 Alanson Harris founded a steam-powered sawmill with an adjacent mechanical workshop in Beamsville, Ontario.

1863 His son, John, became a partner in the company

The Harrises began manufacturing straightforward, dependable farm equipment. John even took it upon himself to travel with the grain harvest from Texas to Canada, collecting the challenges of farmers along the way. The result was the Brantford self-tying binder.

Alanson Harris became a major competitor to the Massey Manufacturing Co.

When in 1890 the Harrises produced the extremely popular open-end binder, Hart Massey proposed a merger of the two companies to which Alanson Harris agreed.

On 6 May 1891 the companies merged to become the Massey-Harris
