Professor Thomson was educated at Spier School, Bath, The Royal Technical College, Glasgow, and Glasgow University. He had practical training and industrial experience with Messrs. Stewart and McKenzie, Ltd., Engineers, Glasgow, and with The Waterproofing Co., Ltd., Barrhead.
In 1935 he joined the engineering staff of The Royal Technical College, and on the outbreak of the 1939-45 war was seconded to the Projectile Development Establishment, Ministry of Supply, as Deputy Chief of the Design Department in the Establishment. In 1943 he was placed in charge of the Service Projects Group in the Establishment, with responsibility for the design and development of rocket weapons for the three Services.
At the end of 1945 Professor Thomson obtained release from Government service and returned to The Royal Technical College to take up the appointment of Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering, and, at the same time, Research and Design Consultant to L. Sterne & Co., Ltd., Refrigerating Engineers. In January 1947 he received his present appointment as Head of the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering, The Royal Technical College, Glasgow.
