1928 'British Firm Finish Egyptian Contract Five Months Ahead of Time
Dorman, Long and Company have completed the Abu Deleig road and railway bridge across the River Atbara, 250 miles east of Khartum, five months ahead of contract time. The river at the point of crossing is 1,050 ft. wide, rather wider than the Thames at Waterloo Bridge, and the bridge, with the new railway extension, will open up an important cotton growing area. Steelwork, manufactured by Dorman, Long and Company at Middlesbrough, was shipped to the Sudan marked ready for erection. Work at the site was started last November. The performance is another tribute to British engineering.'
