Adam Murray

From Graces Guide

of Adam and George Murray, cotton spinners

Adam Murray was born in 1766. His brother George Murray was born in 1761. Their father was a shopkeeper in New Galloway, Kirkudbrightshire.

In 1780 Adam moved to Chowbent (now Atherton) in Lancashire, to be apprenticed as a textile machine maker in the workshop of William Cannan. He was later joined by James McConnel, by his brother George Murray, and by John Kennedy.

On completing his seven year apprenticeship in 1787, George started his own business.

To be continued.
