1972 Ten independent motor accessory factoring firms, all owned by Smiths Industries Ltd, were merged to form a new single national organization trading under the name Affiliated Factors Ltd with headquarters in High Wycombe and regional offices in Doncaster, Stoke-on-Trent, Worthing and Colchester. It was intended to be the nucleus of a chain of factors forming a nationwide network.[1]

The 10 companies were:

1984 GKN acquired the Godfrey Holmes and Affiliated Factors subsidiaries of Smiths Industries. Affiliated Factors had 50 branches specialising in paint, garage equipment and products for vehicle refinishing.[2]
