1882 'The well-known firm of Messrs. Aird & Leigh, wheel guard, cylinder, card can, and roller makers, of Ryland Street and Bedford Street, Salford, near Manchester, are the makers of & valuable invention patented by Mr. Alex. Aird, which has come under the notice of several steam users as an article of great utility. It is known as Askew & Aird's Patent Sensitive Automatic Air and Vacuum Valve. The valve, which is the only efficient self-acting one of the kind, is applicable to steam drying frames, cylinders, pipes, boilers, and all kinds of steam heating apparatus, &c. ....' [1]
