"Major ALBERT EDMUND PLANT had considerable experience as an automobile engineer and had been associated with Messrs. Leyland Motors, Ltd., for over twenty years. He was educated at Kirkham Grammar School, and at Warwick School, and served his apprenticeship with Messrs. Leyland Motors from 1905 to 1910, concurrently attending classes at the Preston Technical School.
In 1910 he was sent to Brazil to take charge of the reconstruction of track and the installation and operation of petrol-driven trams. Similar work then followed in Cape Town and later at Lisbon. He joined the Army in 1914 and was commissioned in 1915, serving in France as a workshop officer in the motor transport of the Army Service Corps. On demobilization with the rank of captain in 1919, he returned to Messrs. Leyland Motors, and, after acting as sales manager for four years, was appointed general manager for the firm in Australia. In 1932 he began to practise on his own account as a consulting engineer in Westminster, continuing in this work until 1940 when he rejoined H.M. Forces. He was on active service abroad in the R.A.O.C. and later in the R.E.M.E., being promoted to the rank of major in 1945. More recently he had been on the executive staff of Messrs. Viney and Company, Ltd., Preston, haulage contractors. Major Plant, whose death in his sixty-fourth year occurred on 17th February 1950, was elected a Member of the Institution in 1932."
