1951 'Mr. A. S. J. Painter, wellknown at Pagham, who is chairman and managing director of a Suffolk manufacturing firm, sailed for America in the Queen Elizabeth, on Wednesday, on a dollar export market mission.' [1] 'Among the passengers bound for New York from Southampton to-day in the Queen Elizabeth is Mr A. S. J. Painter, of Pagham, near Bognor, who forsook the music hall for big business. Applying proper ideas of "everybody lend a hand and make do with the props available," and as chairman and managing director of a Stowmarket firm he restored a derelict factory and applied modern marketing methods to an old-established lubricant and rust inhibitor. This oil today has a wide sale. Supplies went last month to the Falkland Islands and now Mr. Painter is crossing the Atlantic on a dollar export market mission.'[2]
