Alex Begg and Co

From Graces Guide

Ayr Tweed Mills, Viewfield Road, Ayr

1869 The company began as shawl manufacturers in Paisley, made in local houses on hand looms, before moving to Ayr at the turn of the century. There they developed a range of woven accessories including scarves, stoles, plaids and travel rugs.[1]

1949 Alex Begg and Co Limited was registered as a private company, with capital of £25,000, to take over as a going concern the business of woollen manufacturers carried on by Alex Begg and Co at Ayr Tweed Mills.[2]

1967 The Huddersfield firm of Moorhouse and Brook acquired Beggs for £172,000 in cash, but with the intention of continuing to run the business as a separate company.[3]
