1897. Water tower designed by Vladimir Shukhov

Of Moscow.

He was the descendant of French immigrants who had fled to the Russian Empire from revolutionary France. His father had become the focus of interest of the Tsarist police in 1863, and left for the USA. Therefore Alexander, born in St Petersburg, and educated in Zurich, moved to be with his family in the USA, where he took American citizenship. On returning from the USA in 1877 he was employed in the drawing office of the Warsaw-Vienna railway line. He subsequently became heavily involved in the Russian oil undustry.

1877 Alexander Bary opened a branch of his construction firm in Baku, whose chief engineer was Vladimir Shukhov.

The above information is drawn from 'Russian Oil: The marvels of Engineer Shukhov'[1]

Bary and Co produced water tube boilers of the Thuchof type.[2]
