ALEXANDER SIMPSON McWHIRTER, B.Sc, who died on the 15th November, 1947, in his 60th year, was educated at Glasgow High School and Glasgow University, and served his apprenticeship with his father's company, Wm. McWhirter and Sons. He became a director of the company in 1918 and continued in business until the outbreak of the last war, when ill-health forced him to retire. After his retirement he devoted much of his time to assisting students to prepare for their B.Sc. examinations, in which work he had always had a particular interest.
In his student days he was a member of Glasgow High School Rugby Football Club, and he was always a keen lawn-tennis player, being a Vice-President of Broomhill Lawn Tennis Club, Jordanhill, at the time of his death. From 1940 to 1944, he was a member of the 1st Glasgow Battalion of the Home Guard. He is survived by his widow, two sons and a daughter.
He joined The Institution as a Student in 1911 and was elected an Associate Member in 1912 and a Member in 1918. He served as Vice-Chairman of the Scottish Centre 1926-27.
