1959 Obituary [1]

Sir Alfred Chatterton, C.I.E., whose death occurred on 26th July 1958 in his ninety-second year, had been a Member of the Institution for over 67 years. His election took place on 30th April 1891.

He was educated at Finsbury Technical College and the Central Institution, South Kensington. He joined the Indian Educational Service and was Professor of Engineering, Madras, from 1888 to 1900. He became Director of Industries, Madras in 1908, and Director of Industries and Commerce in Mysore, in 1912. He served as a Member of the Indian Industrial Commission in 1916-18; Controller of the Indian Munitions Board in 1917; Industrial Adviser to the Mysore Durbar in 1918; also Industrial Adviser to the Tata Industrial Bank, Bombay, and as a Consulting Engineer.

Besides numerous technical papers in various journals he published works on the following subjects: Agricultural and Industrial Problems in India; Lift Irrigation; Tanning in Madras; and Industrial Evolution in India.

He was awarded the C.I.E. in 1912 and received the honour of knighthood in 1919.
