Alfred Dalby

From Graces Guide

Alfred Dalby (c1835-1888) of Davey, Paxman and Davey

1888 Died. 'On Sunday afternoon last, great respect was shown by the employees at the Standard Ironworks and by the Odd Fellows of Colchester, for the memory of Mr. Alfred Dalby, of Maldon Road, who died on Thursday morning, Feb. 9th, at the age of 53, after a long and painful illness. The deceased was a native of Ipswich, having been originally apprenticed at Messrs. Ransome Sims and Co.'s Works in 1849. Some time after completing his term of service he came to Colchester, and worked at Messrs. Catchpool, Stannard and Co.'s foundry, under Mr. James Paxman (the present Mayor of the Borough), who was then foreman to that firm. When Mr. Paxman commenced business on his own account Mr. Dalby followed him, and has continued in that gentleman's employ ever since — a period if about 21 years — being foreman of the wood-shop at the Standard Ironworks, where he has enjoyed the confidence and high esteem of his employer, and also the friendship and goodwill of his brother workmen.'[1]
