ALFRED DOUGLAS SMITH, was born in 1900 and received his education at the Sunderland Technical College, where he obtained an Associateship and graduated B.Sc. in engineering (London). After serving his apprenticeship with the North Eastern Marine Engineering Company, Ltd., in Sunderland, he was employed for two years in the drawing office of Messrs. Palmer's Ship-building and Iron Company, Ltd., Jarrow. The remainder of his brief career was then spent entirely in technical education, his first engagement being that of assistant lecturer in engineering subjects at Darlington Technical College, a position which he held for five years.
In 1930 he was appointed teacher in charge of the Tramways Technical School, Greenwich, with responsibility for the organization, curriculum, and equipment of the school, subject to the approval of the School of Engineering and Navigation, Poplar. On the evacuation of the latter to Bridgwater, Somerset, in 1939, Mr. Smith went with it, and continued as a teacher on the staff until his death, which occurred on 5th June 1943.
He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1935.
