From Graces Guide

Note: This is a sub-section of Alfred Herbert.

1920 Description [1]

THE Head Office and Works of Alfred Herbert Ltd. are situated in the Butts, about 7 minutes walk from the station. The Foundry and Branch Works are at Edgwick, on the north-east outskirts of the City.

The two Works, which together employ some 2,500 hands, are devoted to the manufacture of Labour-saving Machine Tools, Small Tools and Accessories, the direct development of the business established in 1889 by the present governing director.

At the Head Works are the Designing and Experimental Departments, together with extensive Machine and Erecting Shops. The Office Staff dealing with Publicity, Sales, Orders, Correspondence and Accounts, is situated in a substantial building fronting the main road.

The machines made in these works include Capstan Lathes, Turret Lathes, Precision Screw Lathes, and Microscopic Measuring Machines. Tools and Fixtures with which these machines are equipped are made in a three-storey building adjoining the Office block.

The Branch Works at Edgwick provide accommodation for Pattern Shop, Main Foundry for iron castings up to 5 tons, Light Foundry for smaller iron castings, Bronze and Aluminium Foundry, Chemical and Physical Laboratory, Main Machine and Erecting Shops and Factory. At these works a comprehensive range of Horizontal and Vertical Milling Machines, together with certain auxiliary plant, such as Tool and Cutter Grinding Machines and Twist Drill Grinding Machines, are constructed in the main shop. The factory is employed on lighter work, including Ball-Bearing Drilling Machines, Coventry Self-Opening Dieheads, and Coventry Concentric Lathe Chucks.

The raw materials entering into the construction of these machines are subjected to chemical and physical tests to ensure the required high standard of quality of material in the finished article. The extensive use of jigs and fixtures, and the rigid inspection of the detail parts after each operation, enable the quality of workmanship to be maintained. As a final test, each machine is run under belt before despatch.

In addition to being manufacturers of Machine Tools, the firm represents as Agents many prominent English and American Firms.

Dealing with such a comprehensive range of Machine Tools, Alfred Herbert Ltd. are thus able to supply single machines or complete plant for producing any specified parts on quantity production lines. If samples or drawings of the work to be done are submitted, machines can be suggested, fitted with the necessary tools and fixtures for completing work in the most economical manner. Guaranteed times of production will be given, together with information regarding ancillary treatments tending to facilitate production.

The sales organisation is commensurate with manufacturing facilities.

Branch Offices are established at London, Glasgow, Birmingham, Newcastle, Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester, Bristol, New York, and Yokohama, while the Societe Anonyme Alfred Herbert of Paris, Lyons and Barcelona, the Society Anonima Italiana Alfred Herbert of Milan, Societe Anonyme Beige Alfred Herbert of Brussels, and Alfred Herbert (India), Ltd., of Calcutta and Bombay, act as Agents in France, Spain, Italy, Belgium, and India respectively.

A Staff of workshop-trained Mechanical Engineers at the Head Office at Coventry, and at the various Branches at home and abroad, can give reliable advice on the Plant best suited for any specific work.
