ALFRED JEANS, who was born in 1877, was elected a Member of the Institution in 1925. After serving his apprenticeship at the engine works of Messrs. John Dickinson and Sons, Sunderland, from 1892 to 1897, he was employed by various steamship owners as marine engineer for the next ten years, rising from fifth to chief engineer. During this period he obtained his Board of Trade Extra First-Class Engineer's Certificate.
He then joined the National Boiler and General Insurance Company, Ltd., at Manchester, and began a connection which was only terminated by his death nearly forty years later in November 1945. During this long period Mr. Jeans was engaged for the first eight years as inspecting engineer.
He was then made assistant engineer on the head office staff, and in 1924 took over the responsible position of head of the boiler department.
