ALFRED MILWARD REYNOLDS was the founder and chairman of the Reynolds Tube Company, Ltd., of Birmingham, and had been the head of the firm for forty-five years. After completing his technical education at the Birmingham and Midland Institute he entered his father's firm, Messrs. John Reynolds and Sons, nail and screw manufacturers, and served a three years' apprenticeship, on the conclusion of which, in 1887, he was appointed general manager.
He was admitted to partnership six years later and also became managing director. His capacity for design greatly enlarged the scope of the firm's business, and his attention being drawn to the possibilities engendered by the manufacture of components, especially tubes, for cycle construction he established the Patent Butted Tube Company, the title of which was subsequently changed to its present form. In 1936 he extended the interests of the firm to include the mass-production of light alloys.
Mr. Reynolds held the position of chairman up to the time of his death which occurred on 28th July 1943, in his seventy-fourth year. In addition he was for some time a director of Tube Investments, Ltd. He had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1901.
