ALFRED SOMMERVILLE was chief engineer to the Ayr Corporation Tramways service for nearly twenty-five years, having held that appointment from 1907 until his retirement in 1931. He was educated at University College, Dundee, and served his apprenticeship with Messrs. James Scott and Sons, engineers and machine makers, of Tayport. In 1901 he became a pupil at Perth Corporation Electricity Works, and in the succeeding year was appointed assistant engineer in the Tramways Department of Ayr Corporation, subsequently becoming shift engineer in charge of the machinery at the lighting station.
From 1905 until his return to Ayr to take up his final appointment he was superintendent-in-charge of the rolling stock of the Paisley District Tramways Company. Mr. Sommerville was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1903 and was transferred to Associate Membership in 1906. He was also an Associate Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers. His death occurred at Ayr on 20th November 1942.
