Mr. Towle was educated at Derby Grammar School and University College, Nottingham. He graduated B.Sc. (Eng.) (Hons.) in 1932, and gained his M.Sc. (Eng.) degree in 1935. After experience in the drawing and stress office of Aiton and Company, Limited, he joined the experimental department of Rolls-Royce Limited, and was engaged on ignition development. He was later responsible for the mechanical testing department. In 1946 he joined Anglamol Limited and was appointed to his present position as technical director. He became a director of that company in 1947.

Mr. Towle, who is Honorary Secretary of the Derby A.D. Centre, was awarded the Graduates Prize of the I.A.E. in 1937, and the Crompton Medal in 1946. In 1950 he was awarded the Herbert Akroyd Stuart Medal for his paper 'Some Factors Governing the Performance of Crankcase Lubricating Oils'.
