of Croydon - Department store

1862 Established by Joshua Allder at 102 and 103 North End, Croydon

1870 Expanded into 104, 106 and 107 North End, although he had to wait for some 20 years to acquire 105, a bakery

1908 Acquired by sold J. W. Holdron and F. C. Bearman, owners of stores in Peckham and Leytonstone respectively. They developed the store into 50 departments with 500 staff.

1921 It then passed to the Lawrence family (D. A. Lawrence and later his son S. John Lawrence), under whose control it became a limited company.

1958 Acquired by United Drapery Stores.[1]

1983 UDS Group sold to Hanson plc and Allders became a flagship company of the group

1996 Acquired a number of department stores from the Owen Owen group that traded under the Lewis's and Owen Owen names. This included branches in Basingstoke, Coventry, Ilford, Leeds, Oxford, Redditch and Slough.

1997 Acquired the bankrupt Maples furniture brand and seven of its retail outlets.

2005 In administration and then purchased by Harold Tillman, the then-owner of the Jaeger clothing company.
