1950 Obituary

"ANDREW ROBSON, B.Sc., B.Com., was identified with technical education during most of his professional career, and for sixteen years had occupied the position of Principal of Handsworth Technical College, Birmingham.

After serving his apprenticeship with Messrs. J. Melrose and Sons, Ltd., of Hawick, from 1905 to 1909, he began an engineering course at the University of Edinburgh, where he gained special distinction and graduated B.Sc. in 1912. After some experience in the drawing office of Messrs. Dorman, Long and Company, Ltd., at Middlesbrough, he was for a time a teacher of mechanical engineering at the West Hartlepool Technical College, and later acted in the same capacity at Allan Glen's School, Glasgow. He then took a position as draughtsman and assistant engineer with Messrs. Barr and Stroud, Ltd., of Glasgow, and subsequently was made works manager with the charge of the optical manufacturing department.

He left this company in 1920 and in the following year became head of the engineering department at West Hartlepool Technical College. He was appointed Principal in 1922 and held office until 1933, when he took up his final appointment at Handsworth, where under his direction the engineering laboratories were completely reorganized and equipped. Mr. Robson, whose death in his sixty-first year occurred on 17th January 1949, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1914, and was transferred to Membership in 1935."
