Armstrongs and Main
of Clydesdale Ironworks, Possilpark, Glasgow, Engineers and Contractors.
1896 A. and J. Main and Co was incorporated as a public company.
1919 Armstrong Whitworth purchased a controlling interest in A. and J. Main and Co, construction engineers, and formed Armstrongs and Main. Armstrong Whitworth's engine works were transferred from Elswick to Glasgow to enable the new company to offer the complete supply for construction projects, such as pumps and docks[1].
1922 Specialities: steel buildings, bridges and constructional steelwork of all kinds, air compressors, electric and hydraulic cranes, capstans, dock gates fencing, etc.
1923 A and J Main and Armstrong-Whitworth separated again; Main's sold their Bridge Shops to Armstrong-Whitworth, and confined themselves, so far as bridge work is concerned, to the lighter types.
