"Major ARNOLD CLEAR was a locomotive engineer throughout his professional career. He was educated at St. Alban's School, the Strand School, King's College, London, and the Manchester Municipal College of Technology. After serving his time in the Gorton Works of the Great Central Railway from 1911 to 1914 he received a commission in the 8th Battalion of the Manchester Regiment and saw service in Gallipoli, Egypt, and Palestine. Later he was seconded to the R.F.C. and served with his previous rank of major.
Shortly after his demobilization in 1919 he was appointed assistant district locomotive superintendent at Immingham, where he remained until 1934, when he was made locomotive depot superintendent at March. After holding a similar post at Mexborough for four years he took up his final appointment as locomotive superintendent at Norwich. Major Clear, whose death occurred on 27th January 1948 at the age of fifty-four, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1927. He had been connected with the London North Eastern Railway for thirty-two years."
