son of Thomas Benton

1915 Obituary [1]

ARTHUR BENTON, Governing Director of Benton Bros., Ltd., brassfounders, Sheffield, died on September 28, 1915.

He was born in Birmingham in 1843, and was the son of the late Thomas Benton, who worked for many years for Messrs. Elkington, and afterwards migrated to Sheffield, where he set up business as a brassfounder. On the death of Thomas Benton the business was carried on by the sons, Arthur and John, and on the decease of the latter in 1893 the full control of the business was assumed by the subject of this notice.

He was one of the founders and a Past-Master of the Sheffield Art Crafts Guild, and was regarded as an authority on all matters connected with art and metallurgy. He was a member of the Sheffield Society of Applied Metallurgy, and on his decease the following resolution was passed by the Council of that body: "That the Council learn with regret of the death of Mr. Arthur Benton, a member of the governing body of this Society since. its inception. It recognizes, and wishes to place on record the very valuable services rendered not only to the Society, but to the art and craft of brassfounding in this city. Thoroughness and conscientiousness marked the whole of his career, and he raised materially the standard of brass-casting by his high ideals of the possibilities of his art."

He was a prominent Freemason, and was Master of the Wentworth Lodge 1239, Sheffield, at the time of his death.

Mr. Benton was an original member of the Institute of Metals.
