Arthur Edward Short was born in 1906, and received his technical education at Loughborough College, where he obtained his Diploma in Automobile Engineering.

His practical training was obtained at the College, and in 1928 he commenced as Managing Director of a Garage in Nottingham under the name of Short's Service.

He remained in this position until his untimely death in June, 1939.

He was elected a Probationary Graduate of the Institution of Automobile Engineers in 1925, was transferred to Full Graduate in 1927, and to Associate Member in 1935.
