"ARTHUR JOHN BIBBY, who was born in 1893, received his technical education at University College, Reading. After serving his apprenticeship with Messrs. Allen and Simmons, marine and general engineers, of Reading, from 1909 to 1916, he joined Messrs. Engine Patents, Ltd. (later Messrs. Ricardo and Company (1927), Ltd.), and remained on the staff of that company for twenty-six years.
During this long period he was responsible for the design of all types of internal combustion engines and in addition was successful in the development of experimental apparatus for fuel research. Investigations into the effect of swirl also received his attention. His final position, which he held from 1942, was that of senior designer to Messrs. Davey Paxman and Company, Ltd., of Colchester. Mr. Bibby's death occurred at Clacton-on-Sea on 20th November 1947. He had been a Member of the Institution since 1945."
