Arthur Kendrick Venables (c1884-1960)

1961 Obituary [1]

Arthur Kendrick Venables was educated at St John's School, Leatherhead, and at Lincoln Technical School. He served his apprenticeship with Ruston Proctor and Company from 1900-05.

In 1905 he joined the Merchant Services as a marine engineer and in 1909 he became an assistant engineer with the then Royal Indian Marine.

Mr Venables left India in 1911 and began travelling about Asia and Australia, taking jobs in many countries, until he returned to Britain in 1915 to enlist in the Royal Navy.

He left the Service in 1919 with the rank of Engineer Lt Commander and emigrated to Canada where, from 1920 until 1948, he was employed by the Department of Marine, first as Overseer in the Boiler and Machinery Construction Department and then, from 1924, as Steamship Inspector. During this time one of Mr Venables' most important duties was the investigation of accidents. In 1948 he joined the Department of Transport as a Canadian Government Inspector of Machinery.

Mr Venables became a member of this Institution in 1926 and in 1949 he was appointed a member of the Canadian Advisory Committee.

He discharged his duties with great conscientiousness and with a friendly charm for all who needed his advice and help. Mr Venables died on 6th October at the age of 76.
