ARTHUR NICHOLS MOORE was for more than thirty years the borough electrical and transport engineer to the Newport Corporation, having held that appointment since 1912 until his death, which occurred on 10th October 1943 in his sixty-seventh year. He was educated at Whitgift School, Croydon, and received his technical education at the Sheffield School of Technology where he attended courses in electrical engineering. He was articled in 1895 to the late Mr. W. J. Walker, constructional engineer, of Westminster, and two years later became a pupil at the works of the Brush Electrical Engineering Company, Ltd., Loughborough, where he remained until 1899.
During the next four years he filled the position of charge engineer successively to the Blackpool and Fleetwood Tramways Company, the tramways department of the Sheffield Corporation, and the electricity department of the Corporation of Manchester, becoming in 1904 assistant resident engineer to the last-named undertaking, with promotion to the post of resident engineer in the following year. In 1905 he accepted the appointment of resident engineer to the Corporation of Belfast Electricity Department, and in 1907 was promoted.to the position of deputy city electrical engineer of Belfast.
After holding this position for five years he began his long association with the County Borough of Newport, where during his tenure of office considerable extensions to the capacity of the generating station were carried out under his direction. He also acted as consultant to the Monmouthshire County Council and the Llantarnam Urban District Council.
Mr. Moore was elected a Member of the Institution in 1928 and was also a Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers. In addition he was a past-president of the Incorporated Municipal Electrical Association and had served as chairman of the Consultative Technical Committee for the South West England and South Wales area of the Central Electricity Board.
