WE regret to record the death of Mr. Arthur Watson, the assistant managing director of The Stanton Ironworks Company, Ltd. Mr. Watson, who was sixty-two, died suddenly at Stanton, on Thursday morning of last week, during the opening ceremony of his company's coke oven plant extension, to which reference is made on this page.

Arthur Watson was born in Glasgow, was educated at the Glasgow High School and at the Royal Technical College, and in the early part of his professional career, he spent some time with the Summerlee Iron Company.

He served in the Royal Artillery throughout the first world war, and shortly after demobilisation in 1919 he began his long association with The Stanton Ironworks Company, Ltd. Mr. Watson's first appointment with the company was in the iron pipe department, and later he became personal assistant to the commercial manager, subsequently taking charge of the foundry sales department.

In 1933, Mr. Watson was appointed manager of the iron pipe department, and in 1939 he became commercial manager of the cast iron departments. He was promoted to the office of assistant managing director in July, 1940. He had thus spent more than thirty-five years in the service of the Stanton Company.

Mr. Watson was actively associated with the affairs of many trade associations and at the time of his death was chairman of the Cast Iron Segment Association and of the Cast Iron Pipe Association. He was also a past chairman of the Society of British Gas Industries. He was a member of the executive committees of the Joint Iron Council the Foundry Pig Iron Producers' Association; and the British Slag Federation.
