Ashley Carter, who in the earlier part of his career was connected with railways, was from 1914 London representative of the Oil Well Supply Co and was well known in the industry, both at home and abroad, as a prominent technologist.
He was born at Twickenham in 1873 and received his technical education at Birbeck College, the Borough Polytechnic, and King's College, London. After serving his apprenticeship in the locomotive shops of the London and South Western Railway at Nine Elms, from 1889 to 1894, he continued in the service of the Company as draughtsman and assistant to the superintendent for a further five years. He was the appointed district locomotive superintendent to the Ceylon Government Railways and held this position until 1913 when he returned to this country. In the following year he took up his final appointment which he continued to hold until his retirement in 1945.
Mr Carter had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1914 and was a founder-member and a vase vice-president of the Institution of Petroleum Technologists, He served as secretary to the general purposes committee of his services to the community he was elected a Freeman of the city of London in 1916.
Mr. Carter's death occurred at Sutton, Surrey, on 9th January 1947."
