Built three cruisers for the Spanish Navy. Some details of construction, and of the shipyard, marine engineering works, and armaments works, in Engineering 1894/07/06.

1894 Description of 28 cm Hontoria guns and their mountings fitted in the three belted cruisers built by the Sociedad Anonima de los Astilleros del Nervion, who also constructed the guns. T. Firth and Sons, Limited, Sheffield, supplied the steel. The mountings were made by Sir Joseph Whitworth and Co., Limited, Openshaw.[1]. See Engineering 1894/09/07 for details of the 28 cm gun mountings designed and constructed for the Vizcaya by Whitworth, who were the makers of gun mountings on the Canet system in the UK.
