Established about 1830 by Joseph Balm and Thos. Hill; joined by Henry Hill, Frederick Hill, and Edgar Hill (sons of Thos. Hill), trading as Balm, Hill & Sons.
Incorporated as a Limited Company in 1907.
1914 Managing Directors: Henry Hill (Chairman), Frederick Hill, Edgar Herbert Hill. Probably the earliest surviving firm of Warp Lace Manufacturers. Claim to be the Inventors, Patentees, and Originators of the Machine-made Shetland Shawl Trade (1862). Premises: Extensive building conveniently situated near the Great Central and Great Northern Railways.
