Belfast Electricity Generating Station

From Graces Guide

1895 Belfast Corporation's electricity supply began when the station in Chapel-lane was put into operation.

1897 A site in East Bridge-street was selected for another generating station for the supply of electricity for working the tramways in addition to lighting the city.

1898 The first section of the East Bridge-street station, containing the lighting portion of the plant, was opened on October 18th, 1898

1905 The Corporation acquired the whole of the street tramways, which involved doubling the capacity of the East Bridge-street station.

1917 Because of demand from the shipyards for supplies of electricity another site was acquired for a power station

1920 A temporary station was opened beside the Musgrave Channel road

1923 A new station was opened on land at the harbour - see Belfast Harbour Power Station
