BENJAMIN ROBERT MCIVOR was born in Calcutta on 21st January 1870, being the younger son of the late Mr. William McIvor, chief builder in H.M. Dockyard, Kidderpore, India, and received his education at private schools in Margate and Thurso, and at Gordon's College, Aberdeen.
He served his apprenticeship during the years 1887-1892 with Messrs. Hall, Russell and Co., Ltd., engineers and shipbuilders, Aberdeen, and on completion of his indentures went to sea as an engineer with Messrs. Alfred Holt and Co., when he obtained a First Class Board of Trade Certificate.
After a short time spent with Messrs. Thomas Sumner and Sons, Liverpool, he went to Para, Brazil, as assistant superintendent engineer to the Amazon Steam Navigation Co., Ltd., with whom he remained for seven years, the later part of that period being spent at Manaos as superintendent engineer in charge of a fleet of light-draught steamers.
Returning to this country in 1906 he started in practice on his own account as a consulting engineer and naval architect, in Liverpool.
He died suddenly on 6th December 1925, after a few days' illness.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1902.
