BERNARD RATHMELL specialized in refrigerating engineering, and as consulting engineer to the Nigerian Cold Storage Company he was responsible for their recently installed apparatus at Lagos.
He was born at Hawkswick, Yorkshire, in 1871, and served his apprenticeship from 1887 to 1892 with Messrs. Kitson and Company of Leeds. During this period he also attended evening classes at the Mechanics Institute, and the Yorkshire College. He remained with Messrs. Kitson for a further three years and was engaged upon erecting work.
From 1896 to 1898 he was employed as draughtsman to the Kilbourn Patent Refrigeration Company of Liverpool and later the Liverpool Refrigeration Company and was subsequently appointed head draughtsman to the latter firm.
In 1906 Mr. Rathmell commenced a practice as a consulting engineer which he continued until his death on 16th July 1932.
He was elected a Member of the Institution in 1913. In 1929 he was elected President of the Liverpool Engineering Society.
