Established in the beginning of the 17th century by a Mr. Pickering, succeeded by Pickering & Clarke, afterwards by a Mr. Browne. In 1800 Mr. Browne's nephew, Mr. G. Berry, became the proprietor. He was the great-grandfather of the present proprietors, Chas. W. Berry and Francis L. Berry. The premises were built about 1600 by the above-mentioned Pickering, who, according to tradition, first sold tea by the pound, and tobacco as "Pickering's best Virginia," in this very house. The records date back to 1765.
