1877 Started by James Smith of Tooting, proprietor of the "Sportsman" newspaper, who built the first purpose built department store in the UK

1880 Mr. Smith went into partnership with a Mr. Saunders

1892 Mr. Smith was in the bankruptcy courts and it was saved by five businessmen who made it a public limited company

1920 Acquired Quin and Axten who were adjoining premises

1926 Acquired by Selfridge Provincial Stores

1940 Acquired by the John Lewis Partnership
