Bristol Bridge

across the Floating Harbour in Bristol
Opened in 1768, this masonry road bridge was designed by James Bridges to replace a congested mediaeval bridge which was surmounted by houses.
In 1874 the bridge was widened by the installation of wrought iron plate girders on each side of the bridge, supported by stone columns topped by cast iron pedestals. The footpaths appear to have been further widened by cast-in-situ concrete slabs.
