1890 'Another addition to the already increasing number industries started in West Hartlepool during the past few years was commenced to-day the site the old Stranton Ironworks, Belle Vue, West Hartlepool. The business question has been started by the British Metal Expansion Co., Limited, and consists of the transformation of strips of mild steel into lengths of wire lattice work. The industry comes to us from America, the patent rights having been secured by the above-named company, which Councillor C. Furness, Councillor M. Gray, and Councillor R. Irvine, jun., are the principals.'[1]
