C. C. Gallagher, MSc, PhD, graduated in mechanical engineering at Manchester University (UMIST) in 1960. He worked for several years in the Tube Division of Tube Investments, then Yorkshire Imperial Metals before returning to UMIST Machine Tool Division as a research engineer.

Later he was appointed Leverhulme Fellow at Birmingham University, jointly in the Department of Engineering Production and the Centre for Russian and East European Studies. He is the author of articles on Group Technology in Eastern Europe, and currently lectures in Production Engineering at Strathclyde University.
