Swinden took out several British patents, including three for inventions by George Belle Jones of Shearman House, USA, including an adjustable spanner (patented in 1902)[1]

Branded 'Swinden's Instantaneous Grip', its key feature was the adjusting screw which could be instantly engaged and disengaged by turning a knob, the screw being mounted on an eccentric spindle. Disengaging the buttress-threaded screw allowed the jaw to slide along for quick adjustment.
